Meet the Team
Founder and CEO
Tom is the founder and owner of Class 101. His career as a business owner and college/nancial planner has spanned over two decades. In that time he has helped students and families save millions of dollars on higher education. In Kentucky, Tom has worked with students from more than 70 high schools conducting nancial aid workshops, one-on-one college planning, ACT/SAT prep classes and facilitating visits to colleges and universities across the country. Working with students across 16 states and doing direct consultation with more than 20 high schools, he’s helped more than 1,000 students nd their way to college and signicantly improved their scores on more than 4,000 tests. He and his wife, Christie, have two boys, Matthew and Thomas.
Director of Franchise Relations
Betsy Filchak comes to college planning after a full career in public education. She has worked with and taught children as an instructor and an administrator for more than 30 years. She has mastered how to tap students’ potential with tailored tactics, thanks to her varied background. Betsy works from the Lexington Class 101 home o²ce where her responsibilities are divided between one-on-one client service and operational duties to further the Class 101 franchise. Her favorite part of her work is a tie between helping families realize the nancial feasibility of college and the summer campus tour down South. Betsy lives in downtown Lexington. Her own children °ew the nest for excellent college experiences and show no signs of returning. Betsy’s favorite use of free weekends is trips to destinations like Charleston, South Carolina, and Chicago (both great college towns).
Ryan W. Zavitz
CPA, CITP, CGMA
Ryan is a native Lexingtonian, having grown up in Central Kentucky and graduated from both Paul Laurence Dunbar High School (Member of the very rst 4-year class to graduate from PLD, as a brand new school) and the University of Kentucky Gatton College of Business & Economics, Cum Laude, with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. Ryan graduated from UK in 1999, and earned his CPA license in September of 2000, while working for Potter & Company, LLP, a local/regional CPA rm, with o²ces located in both Lexington and Louisville, Kentucky. Ryan spent his rst two years working in public accounting, managing various audit clients and preparing numerous income tax returns for both corporations and individuals. For the past 20 years, Ryan has served in numerous nancial leadership roles internally for companies, serving as Controller, Finance Director and Vice President of Finance. In addition to those roles, he has also led for various industry types, ranging from manufacturing to insurance pool nancial management to even serving as the National Director of Finance for the country’s largest event rental company, who managed such high-prole engagements as the Academy Awards, Country Music Awards and the Ryder Cup.
